The Waalwege Trails
The Waalwege trails are paths that wind along the so-called “waalwege” of Val Venosta, which are irrigation channels used for centuries by local farmers. Val Venosta has long experienced both heavy rains and long periods of drought, and the farmers decided to dig these irrigation channels on the mountain slopes to channel water from melting snow. The waalwege traverse both sides of the valley, descending from both Monte Sole and Monte Tramontana, and in recent years have been transformed into walkable trails. These paths are accessible year-round and offer fantastic panoramic views of the imposing mountain ranges and the valley below. The Waalwege trails are perfect for families, for those who want to try out moderately challenging hikes, and especially for those who wish to enjoy the extraordinary flora that characterizes Val Venosta.
