Churburg Castle

This splendid historical site rises above the village of Sluderno, in the heart of Val Venosta. It is one of the most fascinating castles in the Italian Alps and is rightfully among the best-preserved in South Tyrol. It was built in 1260 at the initiative of the Prince-Bishop of Chur, Heinrich von Montfort. Since the early 1500s, it has belonged to the Trapp counts, who transformed the fortress into a beautiful Renaissance residence, complete with a loggia, a Romanesque-style chapel, and many lavishly furnished rooms. The armory is a must-see, hosting one of the largest collections of its kind, made up of dozens of period weapons and numerous suits of armor, almost all custom-made by the most renowned artisans of the time. In the Ancestral Hall, portraits of all the members of the Trapp family from the 16th to the 19th century are displayed.
